Live Oak Friends Meeting House

The New York Times describes the retractable barrel-vault “skyspace” as a “finely-cut, 12-foot square hole with a retractable shelter that looks up from the Friends’ assembly to the open sky like a window on the soul.” Designed by artist James Turrell, the skyspace is an integral element of the meeting house. The meeting room features plaster walls with maple trim and doors. The floor is Sinker pine which was specially cut and brought in for this project. The wood was salvaged from the Trinity River where it had remained for at least 100 years, which accounts for its greenish tint.
