The completion of the Audrey Jones Beck Building more than doubled the Museum’s exhibit space and moved the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from 30th to 6th largest museum in the nation. The new addition allows natural light to flood in and increases the amount of artwork on display from 5% to 15%. A new four-story, 348-car parking garage with an office and maintenance facilities accommodates the museum’s high volume of guests. Two underground tunnels were also constructed to connect the garage, Beck and Law buildings. The exterior is clad in Indiana limestone, while a combination of metal, stone, and window work form the 35 rooftop ‘lanterns’ perched on top. The New York Times described the building as having a “voice that is quiet and soulful and, just maybe, timeless.”
